I knew Itachi was powerful, but I assumed Orochimaru could've been equally or greater/lesser than Itachi.

He wasnt fully blind. He could see. =)

He was also dying from a disease at the time of the battle.

Orochimaru admitted Itachi was stronger then him. Orochimaru LEFT Akatsuki BECAUSE Itachi was stronger then him, and Orochimaru tried to take over Itachi's body

I remember Orochimaru saying that, but I guessed he had gotten stronger as opposed to Itachi getting weaker.
